400km challenge badge should be worth 2pts

For biking, how is it that a single 40k ride is worth 2 points but 400k in a month - 10x as long - is only worth 1 points? I regularly commute a 28mi round-trip route twice a week, weather-dependent, and even worth a couple extra rides on weekends I'm not otherwise busy, 400k can be tough. A single 40k ride is easy. Seems backward.

  • The 40k is for 1 single activity on 1 day.

The 400k is spread over a month and is an average of 8-9 miles (about 13 km) per day.

I think it's fair, and do it.

  • 40k in one activity is my normal, but 8-9mi/day is quite a bit, hence why it should be 2pts. A 40k is a rather short leisurely ride.

    400km a month is ~100km a week.

56 miles a week comes to ~90km a week. Over four weeks that will give you ~360km. Add in a Weekend 40K ride and you have the 400km you need without doing anything different.

A 40k is a rather short leisurely ride.

Depends on where you live and ride. For me a 40km ride will take ~2 hours with a total ascent (and descent) of over 500 metres. Because the island I live on only has ~16km of paved road of which ~8km usable as a riding circuit. Of that ~8km perhaps ~2km is relatively flat with the rest being on grades between 5% and 14%. Having to do at least five circuits a 40km ride very quickly becomes boring after the second circuit.

For me it is the opposite. As I don't have any motorised transport I can easily get the ~100km a week needed just going about my daily travels and favouring cycling over running and walking.

  • And don't forget that in a month where you have both activities, the 40k subtracts from the 400k leaving 360k for the other 29 or 30 days making that remaining daily average even less.

Personally I find that a daily ride or 3 times a week makes the 400k easy.
