Calories not added to Garmin Connect

I recently switched from an edge 530 to 540 and also from a forerunner 745 to an 265. Before the calorie count would match the recorded activities. When I added up the activity calories  it'd match the active calories in the calorie section.

Now, with the new devices it looks like the calorie count from the forerunner is being used, instead of using the recorded calories on my edge (based on a power meter, so it's way more accurate.

As you can see here them 100km ride recorded a calorie burn of 2494 of which 2245 were active ones. In the calories secrion it says I have 1891 active calories.

How do I get Garmin Connect to use the calories burned from the actual activity?

  • I use the HRM pro, so this can’t be the reason. And no, I do not want to broadcast my HR from the wrist since I want more accuracy, hence the strap.
Recording the activity with the watch wouldnt make sense, since I then wouldn’t have all the cycling related metrics on my Edge while riding or would I?

  • Yes, I totally agree that Garmin's response makes zero sense. I was expecting it to work with HRM Pro/plus, since they show up in connect and have built in memory. It's appalling that they straight up lied to me. There are so many posts like this in Garmin forums and it's frustrating that this issue still exists after 5 months. I just don't know what to say.

  • It is really disappointing. I can’t imagine it to be too difficult… I mean it’s not the end of world, but since I struggle with sufficient calorie intake, I always need to recalculate and that’s just cumbersome.

  • Same, I am trying to lose some weight and I purchased all this stuff to get into cycling. So, calculating everything manually makes no sense. Anyways, I tried cancelling the order but it didn't work. I will update here if it works (I have zero faith btw)

  • I would appreciate if you keep us updated. Will do the same.

  • It is simply terrible. Using their ecosystem and having it be so bad at simple calorie calculation is an embarrassment. They need to can the development team leads and restructure. This has been going on for 3 years that I have used their devices together . What a joke.

  • Still a problem with Edge 540 solar and Forerunner 965 whichever one you elect as primary training device. Calorie count from edge 540 is downloaded to GCM in activity section but daily calorie count only shows calories from 965 which I don't wear when using edge 540 whilst riding so GCM totally omits active calories from bike ride.

  • I’ve had similar issue. I use an Edge 840 for cycling and recently bought a venu 3 as a general smart watch. I did an indoor cycle today using the edge but HR wasn’t picking up on the watch i assume as i was sweating a lot. When i uploaded the ride the active calories showing in the activity on garmin connect but not adding to my total calories for the day. Can garmin sort this out please.

  • Garmin calories when using two of their devices are completely inaccurate and unreliable. I would suggest leaving, at minimum, the watch part of their ecosystem until fixed. This has been going on for many years and it’s worse garbage now.

  • I’ve just had a reply from Garmin on the issue

    Hi Jan,

    Thank you for the email.

The only way to make sure the calories are not taken from the watch is to not wear it during your activities, I understand that can be annoying but I am afraid it is the only way around this.
