Cant make a call via google assistant with locked screen

Trying to make a call via google assistant but "Sure but first you have to unlock your device" follows....i changed the assistant settings, and the assistant works for questions etc but still cant make a call. Any suggestions?

Thanks. No other way? I rather not leave my phone unlocked all the time.

It will be unlocked only when you are in the proximity with the watch, not all the time
