Highly inaccurate cadence readings

I walk relatively slowly - around 3.5km/h on average - as I'm still recovering from a broken hip injury (damn SPD wouldn't open). I have Fenix 6X Sapphire, and set it to walking or hiking, depending on whether I use trekking poles or not. After my activity I get cadence readings in Garmin Connect up to 195, which is - to put it mildly - absurd! What gives???

  • You could test doing a hike keeping the watch in the pocket, to see whether the cadence and steps are counted better. Hiking poles can indeed confuse the accelerometer of the watch. In the pocket the influence of the poles will be eliminated. Of course, it is not ideal, since (besides others) you will not get the HR, so a better solution may be using the HRM-Pro chest belt, or another Garmin HRM model supporting Running Dynamics. These devices deliver also a more accurate cadence data - the acceleration curve they process is much simpler than the one on the watch, and the use of trekking poles should not have any significant impact on it.
