Connect Garmin 65, 65s GPS to a tablet via Bluetooth?

I was under the assumption that you could pair a newer Garmin 65 recreational handheld unit (via Bluetooth) with a phone or tablet so as to use the Garmin's GPS location rather than the phone/tablet's internal GPS (often less accurate than the 65 models w/ L5 capability) - Basically in the same way in which you could readily do this with a Garmin Glo/Glo2. I contacted Garmin support but they couldn't provide me a clear answer and were less than helpful.

Is this possible, or is the apparent difficulty/impossibility of doing this just me or on purpose to not allow this functionality? Any hacks available?

  • I had this same problem when I tried to integrate my iPad with a Garmin 66SR while sailing last week. I don’t think the Garmin includes current lat/long in the sync data that it sends to another device. It sends tracks, waypoints, routes, etc., only. It appears the sync data from the GPS is used primarily for integrating with the Garmin apps, like Garmin Explore.
