Watch only stays connected to Android phone when Garmin Connect is open

I have a Xiaomi redmi note 11 and a forerunner 235 which has always connected correctly however recently the watch only connects to the phone when Garmin Connect app is open (or minimised).

Is there are any way to change a setting to allow the app to be closed but for Bluetooth to remain connected in the background like it used to?

  • The app must always run, minimally in the background, in order to communicate with the watch. It was always the case.

  • I'm certain I used to be able to close the app and still receive phone notifications, messages, calls etc

  • The app needs to run in the background. Maybe some battery saving setting on your phone kills the app when it runs in the background.

It depends what exactly you mean by closing the app. On an Android phone the only way to close the app is so-called force-stopping, which indeed closes the app, and removes it form the memory. If you really mean that, then syncing to GC never worked with GC closed. Any other operations like starting another app in the foreground, or going back to the main screen / clearing the screen, does not close the app. It just lets it in the background. Many phone manufacturers use non-standard Android extensions, allowing them to deny the access to Bluetooth for background app, or suspending them, and use also diverse other battery optimizing options. Hard to tell exactly - each manufacturer uses their own Android clone, often with very different options. Have a look at the Sync / Connection Troubleshooting Guide for some tips - most of the possibilities are listed there.
