Bug Report: Physio TrueUp is forced on when pairing a watch

Hey. Because Garmin is unwilling to introduce a feature to reset faulty VO2 MAX readings, I did a hard reset of my Forerunner 255 yesterday.

I put my phone into flight mode, hard resetted on the watch itself and turned off Physio TrueUp on the watch so it wouldn't get those faulty VO2 MAX values again.
After pairing it with Garmin Connect Mobile (Android), it showed my old VO2 MAX nonetheless because GCM just overwrote my watch's settings with the default of Physio TrueUp being turned on.

The only way around this is removing the watch in GCM, doing a hard reset on the watch, pairing the watch to GCM and interrupting the syncing during the pairing process by putting the phone into flight mode. Then you can turn off Physio TrueUp before letting GCM sync to the watch again.

Obviously this is unwanted behavior. Physio TrueUp can't really be turned off and thus the option is completely pointless, if users can only really chose to turn it off after it force-synced all your old data to the watch anyway while you look at your pairing screen telling you something about the great navigation features of your watch.

Garmin must introduce a question in the pairing process to ask the user whether he/she wants to transfer activity and performance data from old watches onto the new watch BEFORE the first pairing starts to make Physio TrueUp really be an option that can be disabled.

  • Physio TrueUp is used for syncing the data between different devices with the help of Garmin Connect.

If your 255 has recorded a VO2 max value and uploaded to Garmin Connect it will be synced to your watch no matter the setting of Physio TrueUp.

Just continue to use the watch and let it calculate and upload the new values. You can't remove the old values.

  • "If your 255 has recorded a VO2 max value and uploaded to Garmin Connect it will be synced to your watch no matter the setting of Physio TrueUp."
Thank god this is not true. I just proved the opposite by forcing TrueUp to be off before the first sync and it did not sync it.

"Just continue to use the watch and let it calculate and upload the new values. You can't remove the old values."

Unfortunately this isn't completely true either. Yes, I can remove the old values (see above) but no, I couln't just wait for it to adjust by itself. My VO2 Max was off by ~20 ml/(kg*min) because it synced with super old values. Since a few updates ago, it adjusts by ~0.1 per workout (runalyze can read this out of the workout files). Waiting a whopping 200 runs until it adjusted to the correct values (or say 150 as I certainly would get fitter in the meantime) is terribly frustrating because the watch's sports metrics and recommendations are mostly useless until then.

"Physio TrueUp is used for syncing the data between different devices with the help of Garmin Connect."

Yeah, totally makes sense. But then still there must be an option to turn this off BEFORE it force synced for the first time. There's not a lot of use in it if I can only turn it off afterwards.
