I start walking, and after about 10 minutes my Garmin Connect resets itself to start measuring my walk. While this is happening, I can't see the TOTAL distance or steps... only what I've done since it reset itself.
Any suggestions please?

Depends on the watch you use, but as far as I know, the Activity Auto-Start feature is available only on some of Vivo and Venu models, so I guess you have one of them, and have the option enabled. If you do not wish to use it, go to the settings and disable it. See the document below for the exact instructions, where to find it:

Besides that, you can view the main screen, and also any other screens of widgets like the Steps widget, etc, even when you are in a timed activity. Not sure about your watch model, but on most watches I am familiar with, you just need to press the Back (Set) button (right bottom), to escape from the timed activity to the main screen. Using the same button again brings you back to the activity that runs in the background, in the meantime.
