Hm, I do not know why you think so. Did you encounter some problem not addressed in the documentation, tried calling the Support, and they refused to help you, or why exactly you think you are on your own?
BTW, normally, if you create a Garmin Connect or Garmin Express account, following the installation instructions from the user guide, you do not need to register the device - it is implicit.
