Accuracy???

Accuracy???
Steps, floors, body temp, pulse/ox, etc. All seem to be inexcusably inaccurate.

For a $1,200 "smart" watch, that is unacceptable.

Try harder Garmin!

  • The temperature measured by the watch is not the body temperature. It is a temperatue affected by air and body temperature so it is neither body or air temperature.

Hard to say anything about the other values you see without you supplying some more info about what is wrong with them.

  • Thanks for the prompt response.

I guess I'll have to do some research on why I need a random temperature that factors both, but is neither. You have to see the humor in that?

As for the step counter, it seems to count every motion of my wrist, instead of for instance, the swing of my arm. I saw the suggestion of carrying it in a pocket, but it's a wrist watch and as it is, this titanium scratches when you breathe on it.

The pulse ox read 89% (I didn't get that low, when I had the Covid) more recently, I started getting readings in the low 90's and one at 97% (which is pretty close) but generally seems low.

I will confess, this is my first smart watch, so I'll be patient and look forward to using the sailing apps and software updates.

    Thank you!Call me tone2

  • The temperature isn't useful in most cases, but it will work for water temperature while swimming or if you take off the watch and keep it in the air for a while or if you use a separate temperature sensor like the Garmin Tempe.

Steps are counted for all your arm movements, but there is a threshold of 10 movements before it starts to count to filter out movements that aren't steps. If you wear the watch on the arm you do the most things with it will not work any good at all. Most people wear their wristwatch on their non-dominant hand. This means that many left-handed users wear their watch on the right hand.

Pulse ox isn't working any good for me. I've turned it off since it is a battery hog and the values aren't really useful for anything.

  • Pulse Ox works very well for me, in perfect coherence with my finger tip oximeter. 98-100% most of the time. At around 95% during Covid. Down to ~90% during long breath-hold exercises. Some tips to improve the accuracy are on the page Troubleshooting Pulse Ox Readings | Garmin Customer Support

The hemoglobin level, the tan and the thickness of the skin would play a role, though. You can try finding the position where it works the best - perhaps on the other hand, a bit higher or lower on the wrist, or even on the inner side. Keep the wrist in the dark (cover the watch) and motionless while measuring.
