Garmin use the serial number and proof of purchase (receipt) for the warranty. It might differ between countries and the laws and regulations in each country.
Warranty cards and such are the first I throw away. The only thing I'm extra careful with is that I register the device with Garmin which happens automatically when you add it to Garmin Connect and to keep the proof of purchase.
