Calculated calories in open water swimming is not considering cold temperature and wave. Same calories spent for distance in pool swimming heated at 28C vs cold water at 18C.

Garmin does not take in account cold open water temperature for calories burnt.

There should be a temperature parameter for calcul of calories burnt.

When you swim in open water in the Atlantic Sea, and harsh yourself into cold water, you burn more calories than in swimming pool.

  • Garmin does not use any tables for the Calories calculation, they use heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV). When you burn more Calories, the heart pumps faster, and the HRV drops under higher physical stress. When you work harder because of waves, or in cold water, it will have impact on your HR and HRV.
