Confusing sleep stress levels

Hi

2 nights ago I had a sleep score of 50 which seemed to be because my stress level was poor, although I slept OK. Last night I felt like I didn't sleep as well but got a score of 81 and a fair stress level rating.

The confusing thing is that when my average stress level was 23 and blue it was marked as poor, but when it was 27 and yellow it was marked as fair. How can a low stress average be better than a resting stress average?

I looked at the graph of the stress for both nights and the poor rating definitely has more continuous blue bars than the fair rating.

  • Many useful tips for improving sleep quality and reducing stress are available in Garmin Connect. There are also links to scientific research.

https://www.sleepfoundation.org/sleep-hygiene/how-to-relieve-stress-for-bedtime (How To Relieve Stress for Bedtime)

"In addition to relaxation techniques, there are steps you can take during the day to relieve stress at night. A common aid is to exercise during the day. In addition to other health benefits, daytime exercise has been linked to better sleep."

    ...

    And by the way.

Dear Garmin. There is no stress level show at sleep score section in the Garmin Connect. Not sure but its happens when is stress lower then 10. It is a minor bug that users already reported. Please fix it. Thank you!

  • Yes, I have looked at the sleep quality stuff before. I just wondered why garmin thinks a sleeping stress level of 27 is better than 23. Usually the scores make sense, but sometimes they seem to be backwards :)

I had the same thing happen this week too. One night my average stress was 25 and "poor", the next night it was 31 and "fair"

Perhaps they are constantly adjusting to personal biorhythms, such as exercise load norms or the HRV window etc. Or still continue to improve their algorithms. Just a guess. I know one thing for sure - the less stress, the better :)

  • Yes I wondered if it could be something like that. Maybe it thought I had a relaxing day and so I didn't need to have such a stress free sleep to feel ok.

Yes, that makes sense. Stress can be higher after a day of training, and this is normal i thinks.

  • And the tips for sleep don't seem to apply. I've had a meditation practice for years and I exercise regularly. So don't tell me that will help. It doesn't. I can't seem to get a sleep score above Fair 27-30. I do dream a lot and suspect it's my dreams that are registering.  Dreaming is supposed to be a healthy release for the body.
