HRM-PRO - how to tie the data with the recorded activity

Hi,

I bought the Garmin HRM-PRO to record activity during volleyball trainings because the watch itself is not ideal to wear during that time.

I created a new activity, named it volleyball and started the activity just before my training. After the training was completed, I stopped the training and saved it. Then the data from my HRM-PRO synced with the watch and mobile phone automatically.

Now, when I look at the recorded activity, it shows the calories burnt, I can check my heart rate reading. But what disturbs me is I cannot see the steps recorded during the activity under the saved activity either on my phone or watch.

I noticed that the steps were added into the daily total but it does not show the steps specifically under the saved activity. The only distance I see under the saved volleyball training is as much as I moved with my watch after I had just started recording and before I ended the activity.

Am I doing something wrong or is this how it supposed to be?

Thank you!

  • How Does A Smart Watch Count Steps

... so if you are not wearing the watch during activity....

Edit: ok, there's an accelerometer in the HRM-PRO... scratch-that above :)

  • You need something that writes the steps to the activity. I use the data field Steps to fit found in Connect IQ. Maybe it works differently when the steps are logged with the HRM but it doesn't hurt to test it.

  • But what disturbs me is I cannot see the steps recorded during the activity under the saved activity either on my phone or watch.

I am afraid you won't get steps during an activity from HRM-Pro in other way than looking at your Daily Steps graph, reading the number of steps at the beginning, and at the end of activity - much easier done on Garmin Connect Web, since you can see the counts in a mouseover tooltip over individual points of the graph (see below).

AFAIK, and as  wrote, activity steps are saved to the activity fit file only by Connect IQ extensions, and those do not have the access to the steps recorded byt the HRM-Pro strap, hence there is little hope to get the activity steps directly in the activity log, unless you keep the watch somewhere on you, not necessarily on the wrist. You could attach it for example to the ankle - I do it to at some occasions, too. Or shove it into the trunks Rofl

  • Hi,

Thank you to everyone trying to help out so far.

It would be awesome to get the steps (and steps calculated into distance (km/mi)) right into the saved activity file.

Maybe there will be an update in the future that will allow it. I mean, if the HRM-PRO can save data on itself for 18 hours (if I am not mistaken) then it should know when I put on the strap. After the training has been completed, it should compare the time data on the watch where the acticity had been recorded with the time data on the strap. And then then during the sync just combine the data (steps, heart rate, kcal and some other fancy readings with the HRM-PRO).

But perhaps I am not getting the whole picture here as to why it is not possible...

    Thanks again!

  • But perhaps I am not getting the whole picture here as to why it is not possible...

Technically it is possible, but ony if Garmin does it. Otherwise, activity steps, as already mentioned, can be recorded by a 3rd party Connect IQ extension, but CIQ does not have the access to the HRM step data, and oppositely HRM-Pro does not support the CIQ technology, hence no extensions for it are available.

So if you do not want to wait till Garmin decides adding the functionality directly into their devices (may take years, if it happens at all), you'll have to use the workarounds mentioned in my previous answer (unless someone peeks in with a better idea).
