Training status works sometimes and not others...

I have a Vivoactive 4s, Swim 2 and an Edge 530.

The Vivoactive doesn't support training status, I don't think.

Since getting the 530 which I use for mountain biking I started getting a training status. I don't think the Swim 2 effects training status anyway.

For some bizarre reason the training status will stop updating for a month or longer. I fulfill the required riding the bike twice a week.

To be honest I gave up on it as there is enough data to tell me how I am doing. It worked for a couple of weeks in March then stopped. About two weeks ago the training status started updating again. I have read all the troubleshooting solutions, none fit my situation.

It literally just seems to work when it wants to. Nothing has changed at all to make it work again.

Anyone else experienced this?

  • Do you have power meter on your bike? That is required for getting a bike VO2 max which is a must for getting a training status.

  • Hi, no.

Some of the instructions say you need a power meter and heart rate monitor. One does say either or. May depend on the device.

    I use a HRM.

But that doesn't explain why sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. Also my friend has a Garmin, No power meter and always gets a training status Shrug tone2

  • You will never get a bike VO2 max without a power meter. For run/walk VO2 max you only need a heart rate monitor. It is the same for all devices.

Your friend got a watch that calculates VO2 max for running/walking which will give him a training status.

The odd part is that you get a training status at all since you don't fulfill the requirements. Check you VO2 max graphs and see if you got any run/walk or bike VO2 max values. Correlate those dots with your training to see from which activity you got them.

Bike VO2 max are blue, run/walk are green.

Example from my app. There are two types of VO2 max.

  • Ah thanks, that makes sense. I think its maybe picking it up from walking. I don't run anymore. But that would be via the Vivoactive 4s which I didn't think supported VO2 max.

  • I checked and Vivoactive 4 can calculate VO2 max, but not training load. The training load comes from Edge 530. That is how it works. Those two units needs to be used at least once or twice every week to give you a training status. The training status will probably not be very useful since it only uses the VO2 max from the Vivoactive and only the training load from your rides logged with the Edge.

  • Great thanks. I only use it as a guide anyway. But it was just so strange. Not intending splashing out on a power meter anytime soon. I believe they aren't much good for MTB as too much stop start. Thanks for your help Thumbsup
