Garmin Epix Gen 2 Calorie counter issues

I have a Garmin Epix Gen 2 for a couple months now. I have noticed that it does not count calories while standing at my desk or during other situations such as driving a car. I previously owned a Vivo smart HR and that did all of the above. Is anyone else having issues with the calorie counter accuracy on their Epix Gen2?

  • Does it record your HR in such situations? Is it higher than the weekly average Resting HR? If you have strongly changing Resting HR from one day to another, your daily HR may drop below it, at simple tasks. And in such case only the RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) is being calculated, no Active Calories.

  • Not sure i fully understand, but the resting HR does get calculated during such situations. The resting HR has varied between 56-67 BPM over the period of a month. HR drops when I am asleep and the lowest recorded is 56 BPM. However, during activities such as standing my HR is between 75-90 so don't see why the calories burnt should not be recorded at all. Even while watching a movie the HR varied between 75-90, no calories recorded. I can see active calories being recorded only when I am walking or running, to say when I am physically active and moving around. Not sure if that should be the case.

The other thing that's bothering me offlate if that the abnormal heart rate notification has been going off because when I am resting, or say watching TV, my HR shows up as above 110 and triggers the notification. Again, unsure whether this is to do with an actual health related issue or something to do with the watch. In any case I am getting a Holter monitor attached next week.

  • Not sure i fully understand,

For example if the recorded average RHR is changing  in a wide range, for example one day being 50 bpm, and another day 110 bpm, then you will not get any calories for the day where your HR stays under that threshold. Have a look at the RHR report https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/60/wellness/last_seven_days, or post a screenshot of it, to see whether it could be the culprit

Other than that, it might be perhaps also because you did not fill correctly all the necessary data in your user profile - the age, gender, weight, height, and importantly also the right Activity Class.
