When I do bike ride and stop at coffee shop, pause my ride, my Garmin watch will stop recording. So I end up with 2 half rides recorded, not the full ride. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a 'pause' button TIA

I guess it depends on the device but I would bike over to see my grandson play baseball. When I arrived, I pressed stop on my FR305 without saving and then turned it off. When I was ready to leave, I would turn it on again, wait for a GPS signal, and press start.
At the end, I would save the activity and the result was 1 complete ride.
Stop is pause. Just don't save. High end watches got the function Resume Later which is perfect for longer stops. For other watches the activity will auto save after a few minutes. It might work if you shut the watch off and then turn it on when you like to continue.
For bike computers you press stop to pause and then shutoff or sleep. Then press power button and start to continue.
