How to export GPX file from an activity in Android connect app?

I found an explanation about that topic in Garmin FaQ, unfortunately the "Share"-button in the app doesn´t give me the option to share a GPX-file. There are only two options: 1. Share picture,  2. Share weblink.

When I´m out for days and without internet, I would like to save GPX to my phone to process them further in Locus Maps etc.

Can someone help please?

If you have no Internet, most of the functions of the Garmin Connect app will not work. Just put your phone in airplane mode then open an activity to see what I mean.

Even with Internet you won't be able to do the export functions from the app. You'll need to use Garmin Connect Web using your phone's web browser. Then you'll be able to get to the export link when opening an activity.

If you want to save your activity off of your Garmin device and have no Internet, you can attach your watch to your phone via the Garmin USB cable with the proper adapter between your Garmin cable and your phone. I've done this before using the Garmin USB cable with a USB C to USB 3.0 adapter. Then browse to the device's \GARMIN\ACTIVITY folder to copy activity FIT file to your phone's storage.

  • Thank you for the reply.

Wasn´t there once the possibility to export GPX-file from activity in the Garmin Connect Android App? I thought to have used this earlier, but maybe I´m wrong.

I also tried to use Garmin Connect Web, so at least this works but is a bit unhandy :-)

But now to your very interesting tip with the USB cable. I tried this already with my FR945 and former with a Fenix 5x but none of them allowed me to get access to the filesystem. I also tried diffent Android phones.

This would be fantastic as you could copy fit-files from and audiobooks and custom OSM-maps to the watch, but whatever I tried I had no luck with it.

Do you have any hints how to sucess with this?

With a Samsung Galaxy S9+ connected to a Forerunner 920XT I can get to the folder structure of the watch. It shows up as "USB storage 1."

Sidenote: I did have to remove the case from the phone so that the USB adapter fit all the way into the phone's type-C port.

  • This will only work with Garmin devices that mount as USB Mass Storage.

Garmin devices that mount as MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) devices will not connect because Android (and iOS/iPadOS) cannot connect to MTP devices.
