Multiple devices (Forerunner and Edge) - data from Edge activity not showing up in daily HR, training load, etc on Connect

I've been using an Edge 520 while cycling for a while now, and recently started using a Forerunner 245 while running/for regular daily use. I've taken the Edge 520 out on my bike today for the first time since using the Forerunner, and while it recorded the activity and my HR during that activity (via a third party chest HR monitor), and the activity is showing up on Garmin Connect, the HR data doesn't shown up on the daily HR chart, and nor is there any increase in training load, intensity minutes, etc.

Is there no way to make sure that data captured on the Edge goes into the daily recorded data? I don't want to have to wear a watch while cycling just for that purpose.

  • Unfortunately, Garmin does not use the data from the edge devices for the daily chart as you have found.  The only way to get it, is to wear your watch while you ride.  I have a Vivoactive 4S and I wear it while I ride, record the ride as a Cardio, then discard it at the end of the ride.  I also make sure the watch pairs with the external HR sensor as I find the wrist based sensor very inaccurate.  It is ridiculous to need to do this, but that is the only way it works.  You will find other threads in the edge forums that confirm this.

  • Thanks - very frustrating! I had hoped that some interaction between the two devices wouldn't be too much to ask but I guess I will need to consider wearing the watch while out.

  • Edge devices are not activity trackers and cannot measure intensity minutes.

Training load should work. Do you see training load in the activity details?

  • same problem with my fenix 6xpro sapphire an my Edge 830.

I see the trainingsload for an bikeride with the Edge 830 in the activity details, also for running-trainings on the Fenix.

Physio True up is on in both devices. But it doesn´t sync both devices and activities to one Trainingscondition

In the GCmobile Android App under the trainingsconditions I can choose only one device, the Fenix or the edge, but not the trainingscondition for both together = synct.

    Anyone an idea?

    Thanks.

  • Make sure you sync your Edge before the ride so the training load and recovery time is the same on both devices. When you see the same values on both you can start the activity.

To see the same values in Garmin Connect for both devices you need to start and sync your Edge every day so it can calculate the new values and upload them. All calculations are done on the devices.

  • I've just become aware of this as well and it's incredibly disappointing. Had an Edge 530 for a few years and recently started using a Forerunner 255 for running and daily use. How is Garmin's software supposed to advise the user on fitness and training status if it's missing such critical data?

It's bad enough having to mess about sharing data between different services, doesn't seem unreasonable to expect products from the same manufacturer to work together properly.

Screenshot from my daily summary right now. 'Highest' HR for the day is considerably less than the average from 30 mins on the turbo.

Appreciate the workarounds that people have suggested, but manually syncing devices all the time obviously isn't a reasonable solution. Garmin need to fix this.

How do you want that the devices share the data if you do not want to sync them? There is no miraculous data transfer possible directly between the devices, without syncing them both regularly to Garmin Connect.

  • You don't manually have to do anything except turn on your devices. The syncing will happen automatically unless you disabled that. They automatically sync right after they have been turned on and after each activity. The watches are always on and will always be synced. For the Edge you just need to remember to turn it on before you ride. I usually turn my Edge on, turn on screen lock and then put it into my back pocket and go to the bike. By the time I reach my bike and are ready to ride everything is synced and ready.

Since I always follow courses they need to be synced to the Edge so I will not forget to sync before each ride.

  • I don't expect the devices to share data. My complaint was that the HR data from each isn't collated in Connect as might be expected. The daily summary shows a clear gap where I take the Forerunner off while cycling, even though that data is obviously recorded by the Edge.

As for the training load data, I looked into that and am confused by what syncing would accomplish. As far as I can tell, no training load status is pushed from Connect to the Edge even if devices have been synced. This screenshot of the summary following an Edge activity shows no sign of the run I did on Monday...

Looking at the trainging load status in the browser, I wouldn't expect running activities to appear on the above since the status from each device appears to be completely independent. You have to select which one is viewed from the menu at the top-right.

  • If the sync is working and you sync your Edge before each ride to download the load reported by other devices you should see everything in that graph. Check that you got the same load value on the Edge as on your Forerunner before you press start.

When you switch betwen the devices in Garmin Connect you should see the exact same data for all devices (if they got Physio TrueUp). Note that the data for each device is updated when it syncs so before you compare them you should sync all devices.

If you haven't synced your Edge before each ride the load value will not be the same. The 7 day load will be the same after 7 days of correctly syncing the Edge.

Concerning the all day heart rate you will need to wear the Forerunner during your ride to make it log the heart rate. The logged heart rate from the Edge will not be used for all day heart rate. The all day heart rate is also an average value of the logged heart rate so even if you wear your Forerunner during the ride you will not see the same values in the heart rate card as in the activity.
