Activity types appear in Garmin Connect app but not in watch

In the Garmin Connect Android app, there are many activity types listed when entering a manual activity that do not appear as options on my vivoactive 4S, such as Hiking, Mountain Biking, and Bouldering.

Are these kind of activities only able to be logged after the fact, or is there a way to add them to my watch to track them in real time? The only option to add more activities to my watch in the Connect app takes me to the Connect IQ store, but that seems to be apps from third party developers, and if Garmin already has these activity profiles in Garmin Connect than I feel like that shouldn't be necessary.

  • You can't add activity types to the watch. Some watches gets new activity types in software updates but that is for the latest top tier models. Older watches rarely get new types added. To get new types you should get yourself a Fenix 6, FR745, Enduro, 945 LTE. I got a 945 and it still get new activity type, but I guess that as soon as the 955 comes it will stop.

You can use some apps from Connect IQ like "Any activity", but I prefer to create a custom activity on my watch and then edit the type after sync to Garmin Connect.

Example: FR945 previously didn't have HIIT so I logged it as Strength and after sync changed it to HIIT.
