No gear tracking for mountain bikes

Hello,

In Garmin Connect there is the great idea of automatically tracking hours and distance placed on bikes. Sadly only one cycling activity is included and not mountain biking so it's pointless to add my mountain bike which I only use for mountain bike activity.

Seems an obvious oversight? Looking on here people have been asking for it since 6 years ago??

Hopefully Garmin can add this on, surely not too complex to add?

Thanks,

Laurence

  • There are several biking activities. The lower end watches only got one biking activity but the higher end watches (like FR945, Fenix 6) got many.

Gear can automatically only be added to the top level type (Cycling) but you can manually add gear to the sub types.

  • Hi Andy, thanks for this but I cannot find that menu setting anywhere, where are you seeing this menu? I have checked on the watch and on the connect app everywhere I can think of.

I do have MTB activity on my Garmin Instinct (and was one of the reasons I bought it!).

    Thanks

  • That menu is in the web interface while adding manual activities: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/manual

You can see the same in the app if you edit an activity and change the activity type.

  • You can only assign one default bike for cycling. This counts for mountain biking and road biking. Most people are not going to be using the same bike for both.

I've just tried it even after changing a previous mountain bike session to my mountain bike every new one since uses just the default bike which is all you can set for all forms of cycling.

The current implementation is just rubbish and it's so pointless I may as well remove my bikes. You have to remember to change it after every use instead of a simple assignment to a further cycling subcategory.

This would surely be such a simple fix for Garmin I cannot believe it was an oversight from the start, in addition it seems it's been an issue for 6 years so what's the chance of Garmin fixing it?

Super disappointing for such expensive watches.

  • Has Garmin fixed this issue where mtb activities cant use the gear tracking feature?  I can’t track my gear for my mtb rides. Should I label my rides as cycling?  I wear epix pro2.

btw I tried relabeling the activity as suggested in the thread from mtb to cycling and it worked for a while (minutes) then stopped tracking again.
