Can I track a run in Strava and sync it to Garmin Connect?

I am traveling and forgot my Garmin watch charger. I'm doing a trail run this week that I would like to be part of my tracked activities on Garmin but my watch is dead. I was planning to track it using my phone and the Strava app (why doesn't Garmin have an option to track with phone???).  I know my activities I track using my Garmin watch upload to Strava but will it go the other way too? If I track with Strava will it upload to Garmin Connect?

It won't be an automatic sync as it is from Garmin to Strava. You'll need to do a manual process. Garmin is focused around activities recorded with a Garmin wearable fitness device. However, it is possible to track your run and import it into Garmin Connect.

    • Record your activity with the Strava app
    • Finalize and save the activity
    • Go to the activity on the Strava web site - https://www.strava.com/dashboard
    • Click on GPX to download the activity in GPX format
    • Go to Garmin Connect Web and import the activity using the import data page.
    • You'll need to change the activity type from Other to Running.
    • If you want to change the device type to your Garmin watch, you'll need a 3rd party tool, such as FIT file repair tool.

If you have any difficulty, you can always attach the file here and we can try to help.

  • If this is something sporadic, then you can do what mentioned. If it's something that you will be doing several times and want to automatize that, then I recommend using 3rd party apps to that sync. There are some free, others paid.

Not advertising here but the one I use most to have my accounts sync is SyncMyTracks - it can sync between lot's of different platforms. In my case, I have devices from several brands but I mainly use Garmin so I use this app to sync from Garmin to other accounts (it can do from other platforms into Garmin) and whenever I record an activity with my Garmin, I just have this app to sync that activity into the other platforms (Strava, Suunto, Polar, Fitbit, Decathlon, ...)

  • Thanks so much! This worked!

  • Thanks! I usually remember my watch charger, but this trip I happened to leave it plugged into the wall at home. Hopefully I won't need this again, but thanks for the info!
