Calories are different if I log my activity vs if I just log and it uses activity calories

I noticed today (I am working on some weight loss and trying to ensure a daily exercise calorie defecit beyond my food deficit)  I noticed that if I walk and log it as a walk on my watch it gives me more calories than if I simply walk and it uses activity calories. Same effort, speed, similar heart rates.  What gives?  It knows I am walking as it shows it as walking in move IQ.

The only difference I might see it it is a hilly route and the altimeter  is terrible on my 935 and, perhaps, when I log it as a walk it actually takes into account elevation changes to do the math? I figured it would just be heartrate.
