Inaccurate reading of steps and elevation

My watch calculates my steps and climbing a flight of staircase when i am in a moving vehicle. For example i was travelling and at the end of the journey it gave me a reading that i had walked over 17000 steps and had climbed over 17 flights of staircase while i had done none of that. Why is this the case?

  • Were you wearing your watch on your wrist? Was the watch moving in any way, such as  due to steering, bumpy/undulating road, etc.? The watch uses its accelerometer to calculate steps and floors climbed, so certain movements could be detected as such.
