Inaccurate reading of steps and elevation

My watch calculates my steps and climbing a flight of staircase when i am in a moving vehicle. For example i was travelling and at the end of the journey it gave me a reading that i had walked over 17000 steps and had climbed over 17 flights of staircase while i had done none of that. Why is this the case?

Were you wearing your watch on your wrist? Was the watch moving in any way, such as due to steering, bumpy/undulating road, etc.? The watch uses its accelerometer to calculate steps and floors climbed, so certain movements could be detected as such.
