What max heart rate to put?

I was checking my max heart rate and saw it was 222 bpm with auto detect, normally it should be around 180.

I changed it to manually and put it on 180 bpm

But now i am in doubt when i want to put the heart rate manually do i put the 220 - my age or just the 220, as i have read that garmin calculates with 220-age?

Also 222 is a very strange number to get on auto as i have never seen my heart rate more then 175 bpm.

Thanks in advance

  • Why should it normally be at 180? Have you done a test or are you looking at your previous max heart rates and makes a "guestimate" from that?

The formula 220 minus age should never be used at all. Ever! Best is to do a max pulse test and second best is to look at your previous max heart rates and maybe add a few bpm (5-10) to make it more correct since you very very seldom reach max heart rate during an activity.

  • Sometimes a heart rate monitor can glitch and throw out a false value, like 222. Almost certainly it is wrong and you would know it, so better to correct it if Garmin picks it up in error.

As for 220-age, completely useless for me. At 59 years the formula would set my max to 161, which I can sustain as an average for an hour or more. My actual max is north of 190. I use 195 as it's a figure I've reached a few times, not including glitches.

  • Good day, thanks both for reply.

I just saw indeed in reports max heart rate was recorded 2 times above 200. Now i adjusted it to the 180 i normally have highest i saw till now was 173 so i put some more hence the 180 bpm. The 220 - age is something i read online that Garmin uses this formula.

So i think it is best to not put the Auto detect on for max heartbeat. and just check more reguraly the max heartbeat in reports

    Thanks again
