The pool swimming program does not record kick drills distance how to fix it?

Hi, I have several problems with the swimming pool program, which is usually the basis of a swimming exercise, a combination of different exercises and drills. Unfortunately, the exercises and the result will not be effective if they are not considered properly.

1) No distance is recorded during kick drills and exercises.

2) In case of slow swimming, more distance will be recorded automatically, which will disturb your calculations in long distances.

  • 1) Use drill mode, if the watch has that feature.

    2) Try following these tips: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=iS2KcmGiVb4djrE1lri8i7

  • I thought that my Venu Sq would not pickup the laps because it has not gyroscope so was unable to track movement accurately. I just got the new FR 955 and found out to much disappointment that it missed my kick drills.

When I had my first Fitbit Versa 1 or possibly it was the Pebble 2 before it, it was able to figure out where I was in the pool (and on land) using only the gyroscope and accelerometer. I would assume these two sensors can generate the needed movement vectors to calculate displacement by at least 80% correctness. Having this data, our Garmin watch's software should then be able to figure out if the swimmer using the pool swimming program has actually done another lap (80% of a lap), and therefore assume they completed a kick drill lap (and were not resting).

The frustrating thing is I swim in an outdoor pool year round and the phone's GPS could kick in also. I am surprised that my FR955, a said triathlon (run, bike, swim) watch would not have Garmin trying to solve this issue with more attention.

Until then, I will have to use with much reluctance the manual drill workaround... https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Mu1LRA03Uj4bTqiYKjENJ8

In that case you could use the Open Water swimming activity that does use the GPS. Pool Swim does not turn the GPS on at all.

  • Thought about that, but with open water swimming, there are no laps and the measurements will be as precise as a GPS can be in water. The pool swimming program has the measure of the pool length as default and therefore you know your distance will defined by laps swam which is much more precise than a GPS measurement.

  • That's fine and I understand, but then do not expect that the GPS could improve the accuracy, when you do not use it at all.
