"Unproductive" workout on Forerunner 245

Had my 245 for a month, and with all my varied workouts I've seen great progress in all areas including VO2max. My training status is always "productive" or "peaking", but after a tempo run this morning it categorized my workout as "unproductive" and my fitness as decreasing. My stress level is low and my body battery is fine. What's going on here?  This is quite demoralizing but hopefully this is nothing more than a tracker error. Comments??

  • The training status is calculated from your training history for the past week or so.

Check your VO2 max history and 7-day training load. I guess that your VO2 max has decreased and your 7-day load is the same and in the optimal range.

  • There's a down arrow next to VO2max, but the number has not changed for about 2 weeks. My 7 day load is optimal but has been higher the last 2 days. This morning's run scored a 4.1 aerobic and 2.0 anaerobic for the training effect which should raise my VO2max, but yet is called unproductive.

  • VO2 max is a rounded value so it has gone down but you can't see that in Garmin Connect. That explains the Unproductive status.

  • Thanks for your responses Andy. I just can't understand why I've been extremely consistent with my workouts and have my fitness level continue to improve, but suddenly have this happen. Hopefully this is only a temporary condition.

  • You will move between status all the time. You can't always stay in one of the "good" status. It is easy to get a little lower VO2 max for some days or periods of training and the status will be unproductive or detraining or overreaching.

Use the status as a guide but don't plan your training completely from it. Sometimes it is just wrong and Garmin doesn't know the purpose of your training.

Your body is not a machine. Sometimes things happen that can't be explained and sometimes the body reacts the opposite way.

  • I went on an easy 4 mile run this morning and again it came back as unproductive.  I noticed that during my last 2 runs my performance condition graph started out positive as always, went neutral mid-run, but finished quite negative which is very unusual for me.  Maybe it has something to due with the higher heat and humidity this week. Thoughts?

  • You will probably have the status "Unproductive" until you raise your VO2 max or when the watch consider you to be at a new stable level.

Heat can definitely affect your performance condition a lot.

  • I agree, and just saw this on Garmin's "Running Science" article. Sounds like the heat and humidity are what's causing the unproductive workouts.
