How to track miles while using indoor cycling

Need to track the miles when I do indoor cycling. How do I do this? At the moment I can only see the total time and calories but the info on distance is always 0

  • Most stationary bikes can't use a speed sensor due to how the fly wheel is designed

You can stick the sensor on the wheel sideways. It does not have to be mounted on the hub, it can be tilted.

  • Agree.
I mounted my Garmin SS2 on the side of the flywheel (circa 1990 bike) and measured the circumference of the flywheel and entered it in the settings on the watch. Compared to the display it was a little off, so I played with the numbers until it was real close. Since then the display has failed, but I wrote the number on the side of flywheel in case I need it again.
My son still uses it to record rides.

  • Why do you need to track miles? The point of indoor cycling is to get the training effect. Miles are irrelevant. Like if you ride for 60 minutes at 200 W power output, what does it matter whether the device counts that as 1 mile or 100? As long as you get the intended training effect that's all that matters.

  • It seems that point of view is not shared by everyone, including Garmin and Tacx.

  • Miles are irrelevant.

Miles could be relevant if - for example - one aims at one of the bike challenges, or if one mixes outdoor and indoor cycling, and the indoor bike performs similarly to the outdoor bike (i.e. gives similar speed at similar effort). But other than that, I agree that speed/distance is one of the less important metrics in cycling.
