How to track miles while using indoor cycling

Need to track the miles when I do indoor cycling. How do I do this? At the moment I can only see the total time and calories but the info on distance is always 0

  • It depends on the bike.

Smart trainers got speed sensor you can add to your Garmin device.

If you got a more simple trainer you can get Speed Sensor 2 that you attach to the wheel hub and then add to your Garmin device.

If you got an exercise bike it might be possible to solve. Tell us exactly which model you got.

  • I have a Nordic track S22i

  • I have a Nordic track S22i

Can you see it, when you go (on your watch) to the menu » Sensors & Accessories? If so, did you try to connect it?

  • Check the manual of your S22i, or contact their support to find out whether it can broadcast the data to 3rd parties, such as Garmin. If not, do as suggested - mount the Garmin Speed Sensor 2 on the trainer.

You can also import the iFit activity into Garmin Connect, and it should then have all the data. (a side note: the imported activities will not count against badges).

Or just enter the distance into the activity page in Garmin Connect manually after each ride.

  • What Garmin device are you using?

  • you can get Speed Sensor 2 that you attach to the wheel hub

Maybe I'm looking at a wrong bike, but the pictures tell me this bike doesn't have a real bike wheel. It's a flywheel and there is no obvious place where one could attach a speed sensor, not to mention that a flywheel's rotating speed doesn't even correspond directly to the bike's simulated speed.

  • My wife and I looked at some Nordic stuff when we were shopping around.
All we could determine is that they accept/support ANT+ HR being broadcast from another device, like your watch or a chest strap. And only their app had Bluethooth only availble for headphones.

My takeaway was that nothing would be avaiable outside their app.

I didn't really go into more detail there, because she was looking to have it all upload to Strava. And she did not really like their app, especially for the cost.

It does not matter. I have a speed sensor mounted on my old indoor bike with a flywheel with no problems. Originally it had a mechanical counter. The different diameter also does not matter, since you can calibrate it to a different than the real diameter. You just need to find the right number, so that it gives the same result as the built-in counter.

not to mention that a flywheel's rotating speed doesn't even correspond directly to the bike's simulated speed.

I cannot tell for the S22i, but at my indoor bike with a flywheel, the speed/distance was originally measured by simply counting the flywheel revolutions, so it did correspond directly. And I kept it so after installing the electronic speed sensor, which does it exactly in the same way.

  • Most stationary bikes can't use a speed sensor due to how the fly wheel is designed. If you can mount it then you need to measure the circumference of the wheel. It might or might not give the correct speed.

When I use a stationary bike for biking I use the distance on the display. If a display is missing I will use the time. I usually bike in 25-30 km/h. So 30 minutes will be 12.5-15 km.
