Does anyone find that when mapping a route out on garmin connect that the ascent is well under what it turns out to be on the actual ride?

Yes. You will get more ascent with the device since it uses the barometric altimeter and not the map data. It will register all minor ups and downs that you don't have in the map. If you want to use the map data for elevation you should enable elevation correction in Garmin Connect after the activity has synced.
