Android Garmin Connect & IQ app, for which reason exactly are they using 'Location' ?

Hello.

Starting to deal with de-Bloatwares, Degoogle and checking some permissions settings on Android, I am wondering why Garmin Connect & IQ would request for 'Location' permissions?

Weather: Don't care

LiveTrack: Probably

Others reason I don't know ? To display activity map maybe ?

Does Garmin FR945 improve GPS if there are a phone connected with GPS ON ?

I start activity with my FR945, and auto-sync once done, but I always do activity with my phone.

Thanks.

  • For Garmin Connect, it needs your location in order to be able to download and send the correct GPS EPO file to your watch (to help getting GPS lock faster). Also, if you have the altimeter auto calibration not-during-activity on, Garmin Connect will use the phone to get a GPS fix every night, and send that to your watch (which will then use the location and DEM maps to calibrate the altimeter).

Don't know why Connect IQ needs location permissions, though.

  • Additionally to that:

Using bluetooth makes it possible to locate your device with beacons. So an app developer could get you location without location-permission.
For that, Android combined the request for both under specific circumstances (From Android 10, I think).
