My device says I have descended more than I have ascended, how can this be?

I got a notification regarding stairs climbed saying I have descended more than I have ascended. I walk uphill and back down to base, I walk downhill and back up to base.

According to my device I should be several metres underground!

It uses barometric pressure to measure the altitude so the pressure might have changed. Another thing could be that it counted too many or too few due to reasons found here: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=LJ6vYF2phv7JUAOlsRRjC8
