I Want To See My Heart Rate On Phone Screen While Working Out But Landscape Mode Doesn't Work In "My Day" So Phone Placement Is Awkward

It is a bit difficult to monitor my heart rate while doing elliptical or treadmill using the watch itself because I have to turn my wrist to see it and have gesture work, etc. I like to place the phone on the machine and look at the heart rate in the Connect app in real time over bluetooth. Problem is, landscape mode does not work when viewing "My Day" and phones do not usually fit well on machines in portrait mode. They usually cover some important button on the machine or they more easily fall off the machine. There is usually a little shelf for phones but horizontally... so, can you allow landscape mode in "My Day" OR can you have heart rate or even better, heart rate zones, be something to activate on the phone to track heart rate in real time more easily?!

There is no such option in Garmin Connect, but if your watch model supports broadcasting the HR over Bluetooth, you can enable it, install one of many free HRM apps capable to receive the HR over BT, and that should do the trick.

Also, many indoors bikes with own display, allow attaching an external HRM both over BT and over ANT+, so that would be even simpler - just enabling the HR broadcasting on your watch, and connecting it to the indoor bike.

  • i have the garmin venu sq. i dont think it supports this... i'll submit a feature request for a better real time heart monitor in the connect app.

You better check your user manual:

VENU SQ OWNER'S MANUAL - Broadcasting Heart Rate to Garmin Devices

Broadcasting over BT was added to several Garimin models recently, with the latest firmware updates, so it is worth of tresting too.

  • The real advantage of this isn't just seeing the heart rate, but tracking the heart rate throughout your routine with a graph. You can step it up for a while, then slow down for a while, watching your heart rate trend with just a quick glance at your phone.

I've had $30 fitness watches that support this function. I'm pretty mind blown that Garmin, with all its software bells and whistles, doesn't have such a basic functionality, requiring the complexity of adding a third party tool if you want to do this.

  • yeah, and with firmware 3.0 my intensity minutes are now meaningless and my watch crashes and loses heart rate data all the time. it doesnt understand naps, it lacks simple analysis in the software on the phone and i cant even see the data when off the grid. i am sick of garmin. they could invest in some good coders and fix all this but they dont care. i am leaving garmin as soon as i can. and i really want to downgrade the firmware but i cant, leaving me with a less useful watch. they said i cant.
