Distance walked shown on Vivosmart 3 but not in app

I’ve just got a Vivosmart 3. Today I walked around the house and did some pedalling on my circuit trainer. The watch and app (when synced) showed some walking distance recorded. Then I did a 3.7 mile walk. My Vivosmart says I have done 4.4 miles today, and so does the steps section in the app. But the walking section only shows 0.26 miles walked. Why is this?

  • The steps section are using your steps multiplied by your step length to calculate a distance.

I don't know what the walking section is, but I guess it is a recorded walking activity. Then it is the walking activity you have logged. To get the full distance there you need to start a walking activity on your watch.

Look in the manual for how to start an activity: [Starting a Fitness Activity]

Two points on that - I did nothing to initiate the walking activity logged at 0.26 miles earlier today; and the Vivosmart 3 is supposed to recognise the start of an activity automatically, I thought.

Aha, there is another option which needs to be turned on, “auto activity start”. I’ll see what that achieves tomorrow.

  • The auto activity start will not always do what you want. It can create unwanted activities and miss to create wanted activities so the best option is to start the activities manually. I've turned off the auto activity start on my vivosmart 3 since I want to be the one in control.
