Live Tracking stopped working

Hi all

As per the title, this has now stopped working.

I am using a Vivoactive 3 Music and have tried removing and reinstalling the garmin app on my phone, have turned off the watch and back on.

Tired playing with the live tracking settings on the app and have checked all permissions are allowed including location.

Tracking activities is ok.

Any other advice??

Thanks in advance

Can you start the LiveTrack manually? There seems to be an eternally reoccuring bug in Garmin Connect at diverse versions, that prevents some models from using the LiveTrack auto-start option. In some cases the LiveTrack cannot be started at all (even manually), but I think it is less common. If you know the feature worked with previous Garmin Connect Mobile app version, disable the auto-update feature in Google Play store for GC, and install the older version from an unofficial APK archive such as the apkssl.com or apkmirror.com

BTW, better than trying to contact Garmin staff here on the user forum, you can contact directly Garmin Support at https://support.garmin.com. They offer several options of contact, including phone, email, and chat. Use phone or chat for a quicker response.

  • Thanks for the reply Trux, much appreciated.
I can start the tracking manually, it is the auto start which seems to not want to play ball and fails after 5 mins.
I did revert back to an older GC version 4.29 but that had the same issue.

I have tried feeding back via the app and have sent a request to GC support previously but never got a reply which is why I can on here.

Thanks again - let's hope it's sorted soon.

  • There is another frequent reason why the LiveTrack fails - you start the the activity as you step out of your door, still being connected to your home WiFi, now when you start moving, the connection to the WiFi drops, but before the phone detects it, and switches to mobile data, the LiveTrack is ended.

And yet another possibility is, that the BT connection between the Garmin Device and your phone is not functional (for example due to power saving options on the phone, overlays, limiting lock-screen options, etc.). Check your phone when you are starting the activity, and make sure it has an active connection both to the mobile data, and to the watch (i.e. the HR and steps continue to show the live data).

  • Thanks for the reply.
Yeah I did see some suggestions when researching prior to posting about the issue.
I have tried starting the activity when away from my home wifi range but i still get the failure message at 5mins.
I still get other notifications on my watch (messages etc) so don't think it is a BT issue.

I have ensure the GC app has all permissions including location and it is not optimised battery wise.
Not annoying really - it used to work fine and then suddently stopped which makes me think it is a GC app issue as there hasn't been a watch SW update for ages.

Oh well, not a complete show stopper if I can start it manually.

  • You may also want to try temporarily disabling the Privacy Zone, if you use one, and are starting the activity inside it. Or try starting the activity only once you leave the Privacy Zone

  • I don't have a privacy zone at present. I have even tried removing the device and adding it back to GC but still no luck.

Almost every update to either the firmware or the Connect Mobile app breaks auto-start for me. I don't know if any of these steps are unnecessary, but it got auto-start it working for me a few times: uninstall GCM, remove watch from Bluetooth devices on phone, full reset of watch (warning: losing all settings, try simply restarting the watch first), reboot phone, reinstall GCM, re-pair watch to phone.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I may give it a go but don't really want to have to fully reset the watch as I can still start the tracker manually.
We shouldn't really have to go to these lengths for this element to work.

    Cheers all.

  • Yes, stopped working in Vivoactive 3 (Android) and in Forerunner 935 (iPhone). Not changed any settings meanwhile.
