Importing GPX files into Garmin Connect

I have no problem importing a gpx file into my Fenix6XPro, albeit in a bit of an unintuitive way via sharing using Garmin Connect on my phone. However, 2 things are confusing me.

1. That importing automatically categorises the gpx track or whatever into a "Other" course type.

This then raises another problem question

2. Why it is not possible to either Create or Edit an existing Course of type "Hiking"? This can be done from the Windows version, but it seems a bit cumbersome when I already have my GPX file already on my phone.

Am I missing something?

  • albeit in a bit of an unintuitive way via sharing using Garmin Connect on my phone.

There are multiple ways to import a GPX Course:

    1. As you noted, by Sahring
    2. By opening the GPX file (i.e. in phone's file explorer) by Garmin Connect
    3. By importing it in Garmin Connect Web » Training » Courses

In all cases, Garmin Connect lets me choose the course type (Run, Cycling, ...) when importing it.

Why it is not possible to either Create or Edit an existing Course of type "Hiking"?

I can edit an existing Course of the Hike type with the GC Mobile app without problems, but it is true the Hike is missing among the options when creating a new course on the app. Probably just due to an omission - you may want to contact Garmin's Customer Support, and let them know about it, since they may not be even aware of it. The user forum won't help you with adding it, I am afraid.

You probably mean Garmin Connect Web. It is not a Windows version, it works on any platform with a web browser, which iuncludes also phones, so you can still use it on your phone too.

  • Yes thank you Trux. I've already imported my GPX's files using the Courses menu which got me into this issue in the first place. As for the "windows" version I referred to it is of course a web version and said that to distinguish from a mobile.

" it works on any platform with a web browser, which includes also phones, so you can still use it on your phone too" - that I thpught is a way it could work but on my android phone the web links after logging on in Chrome start using the android mobile app. So that's not an obvious workaround and also I imagine the interface might look a bit cluttered.

Customer support it is then.. though I'm not optimistic anything will be done.

  • Thanks,  Yes it works from other direction on android and also open gpx  file from google drive.   Selecting GPX file from google drive and opening it with Garmin Connect and it imports it to courses.
