S62 deleting steps

For the second time in 5 months today I got to 5000 steps before looking again at the watch and it displaying 0 steps!??

Is the watch resetting itself?

  • Is the watch resetting itself?

Normally, it does reset the daily counters at midnight. If it does it at a different time, then verify whether it is showing the right time. If not, go out and activate the GPS, so that it can sync the time and the time zone settings correctly.

There might be also a problem with the storage - the daily data are being stored to the foler //GARMIN/Monitoring on the device. When the storage is dammaged, or full, the data may get corrupted, and the monitoring files may need to be recreated. Check whether it resets also other nmonitoring data - the heart rate (see the daily graph), Calories, stress, Intensity Minutes, and the floors climbed. And if the storge is full, delete old unneeded files from the folder //GARMIN/Activity (the activities are stored on the server, in your Garmin Connect account, so you won't lose the data by deleting the files)

  • I've also encountered problems recently when I charged my VA3 from my PC together with a Garmin Express sync.

When I disconnected from my PC, it happened 2X that my watch stayed at the 100% charged display and didn't show the watch face. The only way to get it working again was to shut down the watch. When I restarted it, everything was 0 (steps, stairs, intensity minutes for the day, etc.).

I then synced from my phone and everything came back - presumably from True Up and what was stored on web Connect..

As far as I have seen such cases, it uses to happen when you disconnect the watch while it is downloading an update. It may be for example a new firmware, new Sensor Hub or GPS version, new Time Zone table, updated language file, or a new EPO / CPE file. It may then result in a data storage corruption, and it can reset or freeze the watch.

It is always safer looking at the Garmin Express screen, and checking whether no update is in progress, and then first disconnecting the watch through the USB removal tool (on Windows, the function is called Safely Remove Hardware and Eject media).

Unfortunately, it can also happen when the connector is wacky, and there are connection disruptions while data is being written to the device. For that reason it is advisible to keep the watch and cable in a safe position, and not touching or displacing it at all while plugged in, to avoid the disconnections. And cleaning the contacts frequently.

  • As far as I know, there aren't any updates available for my VA3 although I do see the wheel spinning for the VA3 in Garmin Express's summary screen. However, when I go to the detailed screen, nothing seems to be going on. It's not impossible that the charging cable or port are starting to fail and I'm very careful when connecting to the cable. In any event, I didn't have that problem when I charged my watch this morning.

Anyway, I brought it up as a possible way for  to get his steps back.
