GC Web activity Modifications not showing in GC Android activity view?!

Hi,

I use both GC Android on my phone, as well as GC Web on my PC. Mostly I use the PC to add/modify some details.

For almost a year I experience the issue that modifications to activities made in GC Web are not visible in GC Android.

E.g. you can see the changed title in GC Android in the activity list, but if you want to see the details the modifications are not shown.

Anyone any suggestion how to solve? Is it my own problem, or do others experience the same?

See the illustrations of e.g. the title modification not shown in the detailed view.

figure 1: The modified title is correctly shown in the activity feed

figure 2: The modified title is still visible while loading the activity details

figure 3: But finally when the detail screen has loaded, the title has reverted back to it's original as well a.s the modified details (e.g. see the distance reverted back to to 61kms vs the modified to value of 51kms).

Thanks in advance!
Marc

  • When you modify somethin in GC Web you have to sync the GC Mobile first, to load the modifications from the server (or wait till it syncs automatically, which may take long time).

  • Thx for reacting,

Is there a way to force sync? As it appears to me that mostly the affected activities will not get updated in GC Android at all. Perhaps I get you wrong on syncing?

Also if you look at the screen captures, the newsfeed on GC connect already "sees" the Web changes -look at the title-, but when triggering GC Android to show the details, it appears it uses another back end source than GC Web.

(Seeing your other posts regarding custom devs, can you acknowledge that the there might be differences in the data backend for GC Web/Mobile, or that the agent differs?)

  • Is there a way to force sync?

Yes - tap the double arrow circular symbol at the top right of the screen

can you acknowledge that the there might be differences in the data backend for GC Web/Mobile

No, there is only one backend. The difference comes from the different level of caching and exchanging the data with the server. The mobile app must be much less data hungry (hence the more aggressive caching), since the instantaneous data exchange with the server would cause a high data and battery consumption, and would trigger an avalanche of complaints.

  • Yes - tap the double arrow circular symbol at the top right of the screen

To bad,... not tap-able, as I guess the app thinks all has been synced already. Swipe down in the home screen does trigger anyway a sync action, but that is only done on the major data, not the details...

Furthermore the sync icon is not shown in the activity details screen, nor does a swipe down trigger a reload event...

  • ... otherwise, I just tested changing the tilte of one of my Activities on the web, and then opened the News Feed on the app, and the change was there present instantly, without me needing to sync the app manually. The title was correct (modified) on the details screen of that Activity too. Then I reversed the modification on the web again, and the change appeared in the News Feed, instantly again too. Of course, I had to leave the News Feed screen, and load it again, but that was all that I needed to do. No manual syncing in this case.

  • only one backend. The difference

(Strange that there seems to be a difference in the data source use by the home screen/activity history vs. the data source used by the detail activity view.)

  • Thx for responding anyway, it seems that it's one of those quirky IT issues not reproducible by all, but consistently present at some who have bad luck :)

  • ... edit: the reverse change indeed did not show up on the details screen of the app. Better told, the correct title appears briefly when the screen loads, but is then ovewritten by the older version. I am looking into it. Syncing, clearing the cache, and restarting the app did not help.

  • ... so I did not manage to load the second modification on the details tab of the app. Clearing the cache and restarting the app did not help, so I guess I'd need to clear also the data, but do not want to do it now. However, practically all my activities are in some way already edited on the web (title, comments, evaluation, corrected distance at some, ...), and all the past changes (including the one from yesterday (I already had the v4.38.1 that I have now) are correctly reflected on the phone app too. So for the moment it is unclear to me why the app does not reflect the changes done right now. I'll continue looking at it.

  • Currently it appears that I have found a consistent work around to have the GC Web modified activity details also shown in GC Android.

By changing the "perceived effort" of the activity in GC Mobile and then choose save, it appears the other detailed activity fields are being synchronized and thus visible in GC Android. I have been using this now a couple of times, and the behavior appears to be consistent without losing other modifications to the activity details.

Imho not how it is supposed to be, but it is an doable work around.
