Totally wrong breaths per minute data

  • My garmin fenix 6pro is showing totally fake breaths per minute. Either in activities like breathwork(drill is 4:4:4:4 so 16s per cycle. I breathe with the watch but it's showing 7 breaths per minute. Should be around 4) nor during sleep. Also I took a stopwatch and count my breaths per minute, it was around 7-9. Device shows 14. I verified it on my girlfriend's vivoactive 4s. Both devices showing wrong data on my wrist, on hers correct. What to do?
  • Well, the following document tells:

What Is the Respiration Rate Feature on My Garmin Device?

The ability to analytically extract respiration rate from HRV data depends on accurate heartbeat data. The degree to which one's heart rate changes from one beat to the next can be a matter of milliseconds. Challenging monitoring conditions related to the performance of physical activity mean that the pinpoint accuracy needed for this analysis is only achievable using a chest strap type heart rate monitor."

In other words, it means the respiratory rate is only a raw estimate when using the built-in Optical HRM.

  • I get the same when practicing pranayama yoga breathing (maintaining 5 BRPM for long periods >5mins) and the app still shows 14 or 15 BRPM. I've done the same with an earclip sensor in a professional health assessment and it clearly showed the HRV matching the breathing rate. Seems like my Fenix6pro sensor can't pick up accurate HRV measurements from my wrist. Has anyone been able to adjust their watch placement to get a better reading?

Read the above reply, including a quote of the documentation: "the pinpoint accuracy needed for this analysis is only achievable using a chest strap type heart rate monitor."
