Not sure what exactly you mean, but Venu Sq has its own GPS, hence it calculates its position with its help, it does not read the location from the phone. However, GPS is on only when you start an outdoor Activity such as Walk, Run, Hike, Cycling,... etc. You can also start it manually in the way described on the following page of your User Manual: Acquiring Satellite Signals
