HRM Run and Garmin Connect

Why can't I pair the Garmin HRM Run with the Connect app? This seems utterly crazy.

Ah, it's because the Garmin Connect app doesn't support ANT+ devices. Still crazy. Please Garmin, you should offer this...

No, it is beause HRM-Run is not a standaloine device and was not designed to be connected to the app directly. It was designed as a sensor accessory for other Garmin devices. Only the HRM-PRO is a standalone device and has the capability to be added to Garmin Connect directly without the use of a master device.

  • That would make sense if it wasn't the case that the Samsung Health and Wahoo apps (for example) are able to read data via ANT+ from the HRM Run strap. I still don't see why the Garmin Connect app can't do this also?

Maybe a switch to a Pro or a Polar H10 is necessary.

Exactly for the reason I wrote - the HRM-Run was not designed to be a standalone device that you can add to Garmin Connect. It can broadcast the HR (so devices and apps able to read the it, can process it), but it does not stream the FIT files that Garmin Connect expects from standalone devices.

Maybe a switch to a Pro or a Polar H10 is necessary.

You cannot add Polar HRMs to Garmin Connect either. Garmin HRM Pro is currently the only HRM designed to be added to Garmin Connect directly.

  • Ah, so the Garmin connect app isn't designed to do any kind of GPS / tracking at all, but simply take all required data from a standalone device and upload it to the Garmin website *after* the workout?

Yes I'm aware Polar is a different ecosystem entirely, but it supports BT-LE aswell as ANT+ (I know the Garmin Pro supports this but the Polar H10 is quite a lot cheaper), and the Polar app can record as I expected the Garmin Connect app to do so with my HRM Run (record routes via GPS longside HR data).

It's possible to use the Wahoo app to record routes and HR data with the Run, but it has issues with auto-closing or not accurately recording distances at the moment.

    Thanks for the help.

Yes, that's right. The "brain" of Garmin's ecosystem is the device, not the app.

You can use Polar, Wahoo, or any other compatible HRM to broadcast the HR (and HRV) to Garmin devices, but not directly to the Garmin Connect app.
