Mobile course editor is unusable

I've noticed that the course editor in Android version of Garmin Connect has been updated and the course editing experience has been improved.

But there is a major problem. I don't know what kind of routing data Garmin uses but in about 50% of cases I simply can't draw a course the way I want - instead of connecting the dots on the map the shortest possible way it tries to route around a very long way. I can see streets or trails on the map but the course editor refuses to draw a course over them.

Here is an example - when I try to connect the two dots shown in the screenshot below, it goes all the way around. In reality there is a good paved trail in between that has been there for as long as I remember.

And as I mentioned that isn't an isolated case. I tried using the editor in random places around where I live and every time I ran into this issue within 30 seconds of drawing a course.

  • Rather use the Garmin Connect Web version. It offers the freehand mode. You can also use an external tool.

  • I know that I can use the web version - that's what I've been using in the past along with a number of 3rd party course editors (Strava, Plotaroute, etc). The point is that Garmin has just recently released this new version of the mobile editor which is basically broken. What was the point of releasing it in the first place?

  • , it looks like the android app has a problem with a course that goes from a road to a trail and is defaulting to using the road, as it would if you were driving a car. I also tried this same course on iOS with the same result. Also, in your image, just south of the church, there is a break in the popularity heat map which could be causing this issue. The only way I could create your course, without looping around was using "Follow Roads" on the web version.

I don't use the Garmin Connect Mobile version of the course creator enough to know if this is broken or if it was never working. If this was working before, I suggest contacting Garmin Support via phone or chat to get it resolved.
