Is there any way to see when in the day I'm burning calories?

Question is mostly in the title.

Basically, sometimes my Garmin claims I burn what I consider to be an unreasonable amount of calories. My weight is correct, activity levels are accurate, everything I can do to maximise accuracy has been done, and I'm not getting confused over the addition of resting calories - yesterday I am supposed to have burned 1400 active calories, but even factoring in EPOC, that seems to be far too much for what I remember doing.

I'd like to see *what time* I've apparently burned these calories so I can assess the amount of effort I remember putting in at those times against the measured calorie burn, but it seems as though only the total burn for the day is recorded. If this isn't a feature, I think it should be. Even a workaround would be fine.

Hope you guys can help.

  • Well, it won't be possible having such report retrospectively in Garmin Connect, since Calories are calculated in real-time on the device, and only results are being synced to the GC account, but you could add the Calories widget on your watch (assuming you own a model having it). You could then see when the Calories are being added the most, or you could note the values periodically, and then analyze your notes at the end of the day.

Balls. I was afraid of that.

    Thanks for the assist :)

  • ... the only way you can estimate the Calories burn in GC, is by looking at your HR and Stress graphs - periods with high HR and/or high Stress, mean also high Calories burn. Although the Calories calculation is a bit more complex than just that, for finding the culrpit of the high burn, it could be sufficient.

  • ... also make sure you have set correctly the Activity Class in the Device Settings » User Settings. It has an impact on the way the Calories are calculated.

Yeah, I tried that, but from what I remember, my calorie counts weren't very high throughout the day. I did a HIIT workout in the evening, which burned about 350kcal, but EPOC wouldn't account for the rest of the burn I'm seeing. So the stress and HR, while they do show that I was doing stuff, shouldn't account for that many calories.

I think I'll do what you said for a week or so. Measure my active calories every hour to see where the calories are coming from. If the burn matches up with my effort, I'll quit my bellyaching. I still think this'll be a useful feature, though.

    That setting is correct.
