Training load focus not lacking all "high aerobic" training, but I get low aerobic or anaerobic scores?

I have couple weeks been using Fenix 6s Pro and I don't get any "high aerobic" numbers to the training load focus, regardless of the training I do instead. Instead they are either low aerobic or then if speed up, it gives instantly anaerobic points, even if my heart rate has been much of the training in high aerobic zone.. Any suggestions what could be wrong here?

Nothing necessarily wrong. You simply need to find the level of effort in between. The HR is not the only factor for determining whether you are in the low or high aerobic mode. It is especially the HRV (HR Variability) that makes the difference. In aerobic mode the HR Variability is high, while in anaerobic mode the HRV is quite low (yes, it is the opposite of what you perhaps might have expected). So you need to find the level of effort where both your HR and HRV are relatively high. The more the HRV starts droping, the more you get into the anaerobic zone.

Thanks, that might explain. But I regardles, I'm surprised if I can skip high aerobic and just be either in low aerobic or anaerobic. I mean e.g. today, I was doing a tempo and quite far from my anaerobic threshold, but still the device gave me low aerobic + aerobic points...

  • The threshold you have defined in HR zones is not necessarily correct. The device measures it in real-time, with the help of the previously mentioned HRV - the lower the HRV, the deeper your are approaching or crossing the threshold. Anyway MTB is probably not the best discipline for trying to find the high aerobic zone, because there are also other factors that influence the training stress, and hence also the HRV. You better try to find the right tempo on a flat road, or while running.

I have the default settings on HR settings/thresholds as they are close to what was measured month ago with a lactate test (135Aerobic and 168 anaerobic).

Regadless of the setting, I can't understand why I can skip the high aerobic load. I mean it shows 0 all the time. I would expect that If I do sessions with in which my HR is in all zones, there would be also the "middle range=high aerobic" effect impact, not just the 2 extremes...

And so far I have logged more than 30hours on the device. And the outcome to load focus is either only low aerobic or LowA+Anaerobic.

And this is the same outcome, regardless do I running, indoor/outdoor cycling (with Power meter) or mtb...

Is there some settings HR or HRV settings I should take a look?

  • Just a friendly word of advice:

You have severe aerobic deficiency with a huge spread between aerobic and anaerobic threshold (24%; goal should be 10%) I would fix that when you want to improve by just doing workouts below 135 bmp.

As I explained the HR in HR Zones alone play not that big role. It iis the combination with HRV that is important. Apparently your HRV drops before the HR rises sufficiently. On the other hand the anaerobic fraction of the TE is not that high in your case, so it may be more complicated.

I am not quite sure. Possibly the HR Zone settings may have some impact, but it is possbile that not. You could try wearing a chestbelt HRM (must support the HRV) - perhaps the more accurate data from the belt would lead to different results.

You can read more details about the Training Effect, and the way it is calculated on the website of Firstbeat (Garmin's provider of the health technology):

Exactly! This is what I was told, but now I'm surprised by that all my training seems to in low category, regardless what I do :)

  • Hi, I have exactly the same issue: until the 23 July 2021 I had High Aerobic load in line with the several different exercises I did (over the last 2 years using E1030+). All of a sudden High Aerobic was reduced to zero and whatever training or ride I do it remains zero until today! Even though I have done rides with blocks of 10 to 20 minutes in a row in Z4 (long climbs).

I have the same HR-zones and other settings defined over the last 2 years so nothing changed but still I see more or less the same graphs as displayed here, even sometimes with more load in Anaerobic load which can never be reached with zero High Aerobic load in real life.

Anyone a proper solution since Garmin doesn't have support indeed.

  • Exactly! I found this forum just because inhave the same problem. Last years i was excercising mostly in gym and i got perfect score for high or low aerobic, as well as anaerobic when i trained strenght. For high aerobic was enough to go on treadmill and reach HR in high zone. But since i use bike, i dont get anything else than low aerobic even thought iam long time in zone 4, treshold. And connect shows i was in that zone, bit its not visible in training load. Its weird and i dont understand how this works.

  • Hi! I have exactly the same issue. I suspect the problem caused by the HRM Run strap. I will try it with my wife's HRM pro tomorrow and Iet you know!
