Max Heart Rate

I was noticing lately that the max heart rate on my Vivoactive 4 never seems to be the same as what is on the mobile app.  Like today, my watch says max heart rate at 84, but the app shows 87?  Or yesterday the the watch shows 140, but the app shows 136?  Why would there be a difference?

  • I just did a test - the main screen pane shows the max HR average over a shorter period - probably 1 minute, but it definitely does not show the immediate maximum in the field "High". You have to keep the max HR at the same level for a longer time, so that the value gets updated. However, the time is shorter than the sampling rate of 2 minutes of the daily HR report.

  • not sure what you are relating this to?  My question is why in the app would the summary screen show a different max heart rate then the detail screen.  I think I understand your point about the watch, but in app details should be the same.

  • not sure what you are relating this to?

Sorry, I do not understand what you mean.

My question is why in the app would the summary screen show a different max heart rate then the detail screen.

Because each function uses different time period for calculating the average.

n app details should be the same.

Who tells? It is up to the app designers, what they decide to do, so if their decision was making 1 minute average on the main screen, and 2 minutes averages on the daily report, all you can do is either accepting it, or asking them to change it (for example here www.garmin.com/.../) and hoping your reasoning will persuade them to make the change.

  • thanks for all your responses, I am in technology and deal with data all the time and some of these makes no sense especially inside the connect app.  Summaries and detail should be the same.  The summary page is a snapshot of the detail.  Why would they make different calculations in the summary page from the detail?  If HR on detail has 125, summary should show max of 125 and should not be different, IMO.  oh well...

  • The summary page is a snapshot of the detail.

No, it is not. The summary is the graphical representation of the HR monitoring FIT file downloaded at the last sync from the watch, where the HR data is recorded with the sampling rate of 2 minutes. On the other hand, the main screen pane is a live monitoring of the real-time data broadcasted from the watch (though not stored to the sever!). And as such, the developers decided to use a different sampling period for that case. Why they did it, is a good question, but nobody here on the user forum will tell you. Probably because they thought it was better so. As I wrote, either ask for a change, or live with it. You'll have to anyway, because it is not very likely they would change it quickly.
