Can I use my heart rate strap to monitor heart rate when I am not exercising?

When I am not doing a workout, My Forerunner 945 displays 0 heart rate on my watch even though it says it is connected to my heart rate chest strap. It works fine if I start an activity, but I was hoping to try out wearing my HR chest strap to monitor heart rate during the day rather than the less accurate wrist readings. Is this possible?

  • Just start any indoor Activity (not to drain the battery with GPS) and let it run as long as you need.

  •  Works great! Thank you!

  • Do you need a "live" HR display or just an after-the-fact graph?

The new HRM-Pro will monitor HR 24/7 when you're not wearing a watch then sync the data to the all-day-HR graph on Garmin Connect. It's the only HR strap I know of with that functionality.

  • Thanks. It would be useful to know exactly what happens when you connect a chest strap, but are not doing an activity. Does the watch default to taken readings from the chest strap, because of being more accurate? It should really shouldn't it?!

And yet I know for a fact that it doesn't work like this, for some reason...it still just takes the wrist heart rate readings, despite the more accurate alternative.

As Trux said you can start an activity...and just keep the activity going in the background. It's an annoying solution though
