Active calories too high vivoactive 3

In the past few days my active calorie count has increased by about a third for no reason. I have a vivoactive 3 music. On a similar day, same steps and excercise 3 weeks ago active calories was 600 now it 800. Both days I did the same walk and run. Also yesterday for the number of steps (no run) it was about double what I'd normally expect. Anyone else get this or know what could be causing it?

There is always some reason. Either your heart rate changed, or the average resting heart rate for given days differed, or your anerobic threshold and/or stress levels were different (measured with the help of HR Variability). The number of steps is irrelevant.

    I'm getting the opposite. I'm normally between 550 to 650 and now I'm around 225 to 340!

Thanks. I wish I knew how it was calculated exactly. It was just such a step change for no good reason. I was exercising a lot for 3 months then when I reached my goal I rested. Now I've started to monitor my activity again after a week and a half there is a big change. I'll to tinue to monitor it for now. Thanks.

550-650 (or 225-340) for what? Regardless, the same answer applies to you too. The number of Calories does not depend on the number of steps, or on the distance. As written previously, it depends on the HR, HRV, avg RHR, and then also on the time of the activity, and on your body data (age, gender, weight, height, Activity Class).

Thanks sgain. If true I am still not sure however I'm intrigue. I've been using my garmin watches with mfp for nearly 2 years and I've been obsessively analysing the data. Its been quite a journey and its helped me loose 50 lbs and get back to a happier healthy me. However the reason I've noticed it is that I do the  6k run and a 6k dog walk on the same routes at least once or twice a week now and the calories and steps are always similar, as was the average and resting HR for the day. The calories for the run on its own was about right as well but the overall active calories has jumped up. Its just really an observation. Appreciate the comments. I keep monitoring it and feedback. Thanks again.

  • overall active calories has jumped up

Active calories for the whole day? They do not depend on the Calories burned during your workout only. They are the sum of all Calories burned over the Resting Metabolic Rate. It can be caused for example by increased actrivity during the day, or by inreased HR, or by decreased Resting HR, or by a change in the anaerbic threshold, or stress levels. Without seeing all detailed data, it is diffiult to tell.

I also feel as though my active calories have massively increased in the last week. I'm suddenly getting 700 or 800 more calories based on my step count. I've been tracking my activity and calories for the last few weeks and this is worrying as the active calories have almost doubled despite the same workouts.

Calories are not based on the step count. As long as you have a watch with a heart rate monitor, they are calculated on the basis of your heart rate, heart rate variability, and the average resting heart rate for given day. If the Calories suddenly changed, then one of the parameters had to change too.
