My garmin doesn't seem to be calculating colories correctly, my friend and me have just completed the same gym class a mix off hiit weights and her apple watch said she burned 450 calories is 53 minutes but mine says 160! Surely this can't be right?

Who knows? Both may be right, or the truth may be also somewhere in the middle. Calories burn is individual, and the watches only estimated it. Different methods are being used. And while some watches simple calculate the Calorie burn using tabular values for the given type of activity (not sure whether Apple watch does it, but it is possible), Garmin calculates the Calorie burn on the basis of your physical values (age, gender, weight, height, Activity Class, average Resting Heart Rate, current Heart Rate, and the VO₂ anaerobic threashold). If you want to know more about the Calories calculation in Garmin watches, have a look for example at this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-web/225649/calories-burned-during-runs-are-suddenly-inaccurate/1065716#1065716
