Seeing a bigger map on your phone?

Hi there - first post in this forum, apologies if I'm breaking any guidelines:

My wife and I were out hiking last weekend and at one point, we were confused with the signs and ended up taking the wrong way, which meant we were walking back rather than finishing the trail (which was a loop). My phone's GPS didn't help me as it had problems determining our position - all it did was telling us which direction we were heading, which I knew anyway based on the sun's location.

So I started to research outdoor watches with built in GPS/Glonass/etc, assuming they would be more reliable in the wild outdoors. I stumbled over the Fenix 6, which seems gorgeous. - but it's prohibitively expensive. And besides, the map on the watch, as good as it looks, it still tiny compared to a real map or a map on the phone. I also looked at the Instinct Solar, which is compelling for its durability and battery life. While it has navigation, the map is obviously quite useless from the screen itself.  It's really just a little black line plotting how you've hiked so far, with no other context.

Which leads to my question: when you're in an activity and the watch is connected to your phone, is it possible to see where you are on the map using the watch's location data? I read about LiveTrack, but my understanding is that that's for *other* people to follow my progress. Is there an easy way to "follow yourself" in a similar manner, so you can quickly pull up your phone to get a more detailed map and track of your hike when you need it?

The question applies to both the Fenix 6 Pro and the Instinct Solar. Thanks in advance!

Thanks trux. Is there a demo of this somewhere (I couldn't find one)? Have you tried this yourself and is it simple/convenient and quick?

  • LiveTrack is not a software. It is an online service. Just enable it in Garmin Connect (Menu » LiveTrack), set your own email address in the Sharing Settings, and start an outdoor activity using GPS (i.e. Run, Cycling,...)

Right, I'm still researching which watch to buy so I was curious if there was anyone who has uploaded e.g. a youtube demo of how this works in practice and whether it fulfills my needs as described in the original post.

All you need to do is typing "LiveTrack" or "LiveTrack Garmin" at YT:

  • You can use Garmin Explore mobile app which will show your current activity on map

It's that simple? I'm surprised others didn't already know this in the forum. MoHaX, have you used this yourself "live" and, does it work well? Thanks for the answer!

  • It's recent addition to features in Garmin Explore. I think that it's enabled by default, but your need to check settings:

    - Devices/Device information/Sync current activity

    - Map/Map Settings/Current activity

I didn't test this feature, just found about it when I have problems with syncing my activities to Garmin Explore. When I see that we have "Sync Current Activity" I glance over Garmin Eplorer during activity to see what this feature do. Even I see trail from current activity on map during it, the same activity wasn't synced after I finish it.

Just to be clear, device that I use is Instinct. Even before this feature was added I used Garmin Explore to see my position on map, but it was from phone GPS location.

Hope that my explanation will be helpful for you.
