Set maximum heart rate

Hi everyone,

neither on the Garmin Connect web page nor in the Garmin Connect Android App have I found a way how I can Change/set my maximum heart rate.

According to Garmins Formula (220 - age), my maximum heart rate should be 191. However, I've already reached a heart rate of 200 during Trainings - hence I'd like to adjust that in my Garmin profile so that Garmin can calculate the "heart rate zones" correctly. Is there any way to do that and if so: how?

Thanks in Advance!

  • Go to Garmin Connect Web. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/

Click Devices & Sync Status in the top right corner

Next to your device click on Device Settings

    Click the User Settings tab

Scroll down to Heart Rate Zones

Make changes, Save Settings, then sync your device

  • The 220 - age formula is only an estimate, and one that's remarkably inaccurate.

Your maximum heart rate is the fastest you've been able to get your heart to beat during strenuous exercise.  By definition, you cannot exceed your own maximum heart rate.

The expensive way to determine your maximum heart rate is to go to a sports doctor and have them test you.  They'll put you on a treadmill and keep increasing the speed until you can't go any faster.  (There may be rabid dogs involved.)

The way I initially set my maximum heart rate was to run a 5K race as hard as I could, then look at the results in Connect.  Whatever my maximum heart rate was, that's what I set it to.
